Sea Notes Winter 2006/2007

Dormancy? Not us!
When our summer ends, and when the humpbacks leave for their month-long journey across the Pacific to the warm waters of Hawaii, the PMMC usually enters a state of hibernation. Visits to the office are less frequent, then only to check email, pay bills and even organize files (not well enough). NOT THIS YEAR!

The following snippets of information describe both the activities and the growth of your organization. Our to-do list has been shuffled by events and developments, some of which we anticipated, some we envisioned, and some which were out of radar range.

This on-line newsletter is another step in the evolution of the Petersburg Marine Mammal Center. This is yet another way to get out "the word". In fact, in the day of text messaging, cell phones, and a 24 hour news cycle, we have been behind in using this medium. Thanks to our Advisor and web guru Jeff Reynolds, we are surging forward with news about our programs.

PSA Progress

Lisa Strong-Aufhauser narrating Frederick Soundings piece.

Lisa Strong-Aufhauser owner of Strong Mountain Productions has signed-on to develop audio templates for "Frederick Soundings", a radio program that we are developing. These public service announcement segments have long been the goal of the PMMC Board. Lisa will produce the first few segments for future airing on Petersburg’s local FM station KFSK.

As many as 15 segments have been written by a collaboration of Kiana Kegel, Barry Bracken, Jim Nahmens and Lee Ribich. Each segment features some specific information about marine mammals: behaviors, identifying features, range and migration as examples. These three minute productions will be similar to the U.S. Forest Service’s Tongass Journal and will be prepared for the summer of 2007.

Board Expansion

The Board voted to approve Julianne Curry as a new member to the Board of Directors. Julianne will serve as a Member-at -Large. Julianne will be our liason with the fishing community and brings fresh ideas and energy to our organization. Her knowledge of, involvement in, and contacts with fishing interests will be helpful as we pursue some resolutions with entanglement issues. Welcome Julianne!

PMMC Annual Meeting
Mark your calendars for April 13th for the PMMC Annual meeting. This fun event is open to the public and will feature presentations and discussions of the Center's projects, future and other activities. More details to follow soon, please check the website for updates.
