Eagle’s Nest: Wild about Marine Mammals!

Whales! Whales! Everywhere! The Petersburg Marine Mammal Center interns invited the children from Eagle’s Nest down to the center for some fun learning activities about whales and sea otters. On their first expedition to the center this summer, the children (1st-4th grade) gathered together and viewed a presentation on humpback whales from the “True Blue Friend” interactive CD. The children participated enthusiastically when asked questions, and they especially enjoyed the portion of the presentation that played humpback whale sounds to them! After the short presentation, it was time for arts and crafts! The children were put into groups, with each group having an intern or member of Eagle’s Nest staff, and were shown how to make origami whales. After folding the paper into whales, the children colored and decorated their whales. PMMC was fortunate enough for some of the children’s work to be donated to the center to be out on display!

On Eagle’s Nest second exploration trip to PMMC, they received a short PowerPoint presentation on sea otters. The children sat enthralled while the interns showed pictures and discussed otter behaviors. They especially loved the video of a sea otter eating, and the vocalizations of a pup sea otter crying for its mother. After the presentation was completed, the children gathered around the tables and colored sea otter parts. The sea otter parts were then cut out and glued to a brown paper bag. The end result was 20 sea otter puppets, each with their own unique design. One group of children got creative and cut their bag s to make sea otter pups! The staff and children of Eagle’s Nest, as well as the interns at PMMC, had a great time during their visits. Eagle’s Nest will be visiting PMMC for the last time this summer the first week of August.
